Blast & $50 Amazon Gift Card or Paypal Cash Giveaway: Daisy: Between A Rock and a Hard Place by Janis F. Kearney

Presidential diarist and author Janis F. Kearney transforms civil rights legend Daisy Gatson Bates’ life from black and white, to living color.  The author, who interviewed Bates many times; recreates her conversations and interviews to “fill in” places left un-filled, and colors incidents and experiences, to bring Daisy Bates to life. Kearney plums the mysterious murder of Bates’ mother, and the orphan’s childhood; the young woman’s prophetic decision to share a traveling salesman’s life; her non-traditional role as co-publisher of an award winning newspaper; and her leadership role at a time, and place where women rarely led.
Between a Rock and a Hard Place is Daisy’s “look back” at her life, and…finally, a self-analysis of how, and possibly, why she became the Daisy Gatson Bates for which she is known throughout the world.  Author Janis F. Kearney recounts the leader’s many friendships, relationships and associations that helps define who she was in the eyes of the world – from Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Clinton; First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt; the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.; Roy Wilson, NAACP President; Thurgood Marshall and Wiley Branton, NAACP attorneys, Maya Angelou and Jackie Robinson… and countless others.
The author met Daisy Bates in the summer of 1969, at the age of16. From that moment, the high school student dreamed of working for the woman her father called one of Arkansas’ greatest leaders – black or white.  The book is based on the author’s personal interviews, oral histories, conversations and in-depth research.

Praise
“Thank you to Janis F. Kearney for shedding a critical light on an often forgotten civil rights heroine. Daisy Bates was a woman who refused to be defined by society’s rules on both race and place in America. An often controversial figure, Bates lived life on her own terms, for which she paid dearly. She was an American hero who loved her country for all its greatness; but courageously proclaimed it could and should be better.” ~Sharon La Cruise, Producer

Blog Tour & Review: The Blood Done Signed My Name by M. Ann Ricks

20121227-133336.jpg

About The Book:

Are the sins of the father and mother visited upon their sons and daughters?

Undoubtedly damaged, Honey Lamb, like many, is a descendant of an unfortunate legacy of molestation, addiction, murder and bad decisions. For as long as she could remember, she believed the unhappiness she experienced was somehow bequeathed to her. The blood that surged through her veins seemed to be tainted and she often wondered about the DNA she possessed. Experiencing more than her share of misery at the hands of her mother, an alcoholic; the source of all her woes, Honey believed she’d overcome her seemingly checkered path all by herself when she met and married, Mason; a man she loves beyond her own understanding. Unfortunately, unsettling memories emerge to crack the veneer of her seemingly happy existence. Feeling unable to escape what she believed to be her destiny, Honey makes a decision that may have ruined her life. Not realizing God places people in our lives for His purpose, she reluctantly embarks upon a journey that will open her heart to a divine inheritance. Will she accept what God has already given to her or will she shun the invitation of salvation and allow her familial carnal legacy to continue to the next generation? Will she come to understand that Jesus’ blood redeemed us from a self-defeating existence because He became the sinful inheritance for us while at the same time eradicating it forever, giving us a spiritual blood transfusion that would change us all?

My Review:

M. Ann Ricks writes an uplifting and inspirational tale in The Blood Done Signed My Name. The main character, Honey Lamb, is burdened with going through life carrying the sins of her mother. Honey Lamb had a childhood that makes you want to root for her in hopes that she will overcome all of her struggles.

The Blood Done Signed My Name is a book that will stay on your mind long after you put it down. I stopped short of giving this book 5 stars because there are a few parts of the story that are drawn out especially that the ”betrayal’ was not revealed until almost the end. Overall, this was a very good read and lesson on deliverance and how Jesus is the only one that has the power to change our lives. 4 Stars

Husband 101 by A’ndrea Wilson

Book Description:

How many women does it take to ruin a marriage? Eric Hayes is a man with too many women in his life. As a bachelor, he loved all of the attention, but now being a married man, he quickly realizes that he cannot please more than one woman at a time. Succumbing to the pressure, Eric takes a course at his wife’s church to become better equipped for the bittersweet realities of marriage: Husband 101. The course ends up being more than he bargained for and his role and actions as a man are put to the test, one that he struggles to pass. Unable to keep everyone satisfied, Eric’s picture-perfect life begins to crumble even before he can make it to his first anniversary. Will he heed to good advice and put into practice the lessons that can salvage his family, or will pride and self-reliance guarantee his fall?

My Review:

To say I was excited to read Husband 101 by A’ndrea Wilson would be an understatement. Since reading Wife 101 (which was released in November 2011), I have been telling everyone I know about Wilson’s work. Husband 101 continues the story of Amber and Eric who are now married and expecting their first child.

Eric thought he knew all there was to being a good husband but when Amber urges him to attend the Husband 101 at her church, he realizes that he was deeply mistaken. Eric’s ambition to be a success on his own causes him to go down a path that blurs the line between bending the truth and telling a lie. Throughout the thirteen week Husband 101 course, Eric reevaluates, reexamines, and reassess his views on marriage and his role and responsibility as a husband.

Husband 101 clearly looks at the topic of men and marriage just as Wife 101 explored women and their role in marriage. Both books are work of fiction, but each chapter teaches a lesson that ministers to your soul and gives you a greater understanding of the words written in the Bible. Like its predecessor (Wife 101), Husband 101 is one of my favorite reads in the last twelve months. Couples 101 cannot be released soon enough!

My Rating:

5 star rating

A Christmas Surprise by Janelle Taylor

Title: Doesn’t Quite Hit the Mark

Description:

An unexpected miracle or a risky dream? She never expected to get pregnant so soon after a health scare, and her work as a nurse makes her all too aware of the dangers. Will sharing her secret with her adoring husband create a holiday disaster— or a Christmas surprise? Betsy Reed and her husband, Tommy, have a marriage that other people envy—romantic, passionate, and filled with happiness. The news Betsy brings home from her doctor right before Christmas could destroy all that. Against all odds, just a few months after surgery to remove cysts in her uterus, she’s pregnant. She’s familiar with the dangers of pregnancy—her beloved sister-in-law died of complications. As Betsy and Tommy head for a Christmas in the Blue Ridge mountains, he begins to realize she’s hiding something from him. Although their nights are filled with desire, her holiday joy seems forced. He fears the worst. New York Times bestselling romance author Janelle Taylor puts her magic to work in this Christmas story about love, courage, faith, and trust.

My Review:

A Christmas Surprise by Janelle Taylor is the story of a married couple, Betsy and Tommy, and they are keeping secrets from one another. Betsy and Tommy are spending their first Christmas away from their respective families and are nervous and scared to face the elephant in the room. A Christmas Surprise has elements of romance because the love between the couple is apparent but after reading this book I was not really in the Christmas spirit. The premise of this book is a solid one but it is my opinion that the author should have made it into a full length book because it seemed rushed and not fully developed.

Sex, Lies, and Child Support: The Unholy Trinity by E. Lemont Goode, Jr.

Book Description from Amazon:

In the often volatile world of relationships, three Atlanta individuals discover that crossing the thin line that separates love from hate can lead to explosive consequences.

Mikaela Carter has a well-earned reputation as a woman to be feared in Atlanta’s legal circles. A hot-shot attorney by day, the beautiful Miss Carter is nonetheless a sexually frustrated single woman by night. Just as all seems lost her love life receives an unexpected jolt. A deadly incident brings that to an abrupt end, though, leaving her as the central figure in that tragedy.

To outside observers, Leah Sanchez has the perfect life. But looks can be deceiving as she finds herself in a rocky marriage on the brink of divorce. Facing a nasty custody battle that threatens the most important thing in her world, her daughter, she is unaware that a guarded family secret poses an even greater threat.

Hoop star Jordan Michaels’ life would be near perfect if not for a severe case of baby mama drama. As he closes in on a new contract, he fears that his child’s mother will seek a pay increase of her own…literally at his expense. He decides on a plan of action, one that ultimately threatens to produce a lose-lose when a person from their past unexpectedly enters the picture.

When their three lives intersect, all hell breaks loose, and they discover that when it comes to sex, lies, and child support, even the divine will turn devilish when lured by the root of all evil!

My Review:

I will admit that the title Sex, Lies, and Child Support: The Unholy Trinity did not have me in a rush to read this piece of work by E. Lemont Goode, Jr. But, I am so glad that I looked past the title and started to read it. Once I started, I was completely mesmerized. It was as if I was receiving a behind the scenes look into the stories that are told on all of the gossip websites and television shows.

If you mix professional athletes, with women looking for an easy paycheck, and broken hearts, then you have a recipe for drama and disaster.  Sex, Lies, and Child Support centers around Jordan who is a star NBA player who will go to great lengths to protect his family man image. The secrets, lies, plotting, and scheming done by the cast of characters in Sex, Lies, and Child Support: The Unholy Trinity will keep you entertained page after page. E. Lemont Goode, Jr. is truly a talented writer and I look forward to seeing what else he has in store for us!

Can I Be Frank! by Rickey Teems II

20121222-113846.jpg

Rickey Teems II tackles the often ignored and sensitive subject of internet porn addiction and turns it into an entertaining read in Can I Be Frank! We meet Frank(lin) while he is watching porn on his computer at work in his cubicle, what an introduction and who does that? Does Frank not know browsing history is traced by employers or is his addiction that deep that he merely does not care? Frank not only loses his job; his wife also says she is leaving him.

Franks finds solace in singing karaoke all over the city but he knows that something must change in his life. My favorite part of the book is when Frank’s cousin suggests he starts dating. Teems’ descriptions of these dates had me laughing out loud because Frank has absolutely no concept of how to interact with women nor how to censor himself.

Even though Frank is going on these dates and making ends meet by singing, his addiction to porn is still there. Well, that is until he finds a new sense of spirituality and then Teems takes us on another journey to see if Frank will choose his addiction or his faith. As with all of his novels, Rickey Teems II explores social issues that make you think, make you feel and most of all, will keep you engaged. Can I Be Frank! is one novella you should definitely read!

Blog Tour Review & Interview: Bud’s Christmas Wish by Ashley Nemer

20121219-202506.jpg

Blurb:

If a dream is a wish your heart makes, can it hear those things we want even if we don’t know what they are? When sorrow brings young Lucy home to a land full of mystery, steeped in tradition and colored with unspoken magic, she finds herself reevaluating her life and her own place in it. Things are never what they seem, and people are seldom what you THINK them to be if all you base it on is what your eyes see and not what your soul speaks. There’s a fine line between destiny and duty, but when both are blended with love, who knows what miracles can occur at Christmas?

Review:

Bud’s Christmas Wish by Ashley Nemer is a sweet and short holiday story. It is based around Lucy who has moved from America to Ireland to be with her aging grandmother. Lucy meets Bud, Bud falls in love with her, and after their first date, she falls in love with him too. The story was a little far-fetched to me but it was cute and a quick read. 3 Stars

Meet Ashley Nemer

1. When did you fall in love with books?

Probably easiest to pin point would be in high school, I read VC Andrews and a few other young adult authors until my friend introduced me to Ashes to Ashes by Tami Hoag that’s when reading became a real true hobby.

2. When did you realize you wanted to write?

Writing is something I’ve enjoyed for a long time. I was on the Journalism team in 8th grade then the debate team all through high school. All we did was writing. In college I loved researching and writing papers and even had a poem or two published in a book.

3. Tell us about yourself.

I am a very social person and enjoy sharing laughs and life with everyone. Obviously reading and writing are my hobbies. I have two dogs and a wonderful Husband. Coming home to the three of them every night is perfect. I’m the oldest of 3 and I was born in Kansas and moved to Texas when I was 11. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and a minor in Political Science. I’m also a 2nd degree decided Black Belt in the American Taekwondo Association.

4. Who are your favorite authors?

So many! #1 hands down is Tami Hoag and Catherine Counter comes in a close second. Kay Hooper, Linda Howard, J.R. Ward, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Richelle Mead, Kim Harrison, Angela Knight, the list goes on and on….

5. What are your favorite books?

My favorite Book is Dark Paradise by Tami Hoag and my favorite series is the FBI Thriller series by Catherine Coulter staring Dillon Savich and his wife Sherlock, then Kay Hooper’s Bishop/SCU Series.

6. Are you currently working on anything new? If so, please give a brief synopsis and when should we expect it?

I have the sequel to Blood Purple, my Debut Novel coming soon, Blood Yellow. It’s currently in the editing process. Zayn and Nikole have to tackle more than just the physical enemies hounding their family. They have to battle and overcome their internal struggles and demands. I’ve started the third book in the Blood Series, Blood Green. I also have a Young Adult series I just started writing called Maverick’s Touch staring Nadia Maverick who is a reporter in Cedar Rapids. She constantly ends up getting into random bouts of trouble. I also have a Poetry book that’s currently under review with my publisher that I co-authored with two girlfriends of mine.

7. What makes you unique as an author?

I have been told my writing style is unique and different than the typical author. I try hard to not do what the reader expects and to keep everyone guessing. I like to be different and I think the way I go about it is refreshing.

8. Why should readers pick up your books?

Because when you read my books, you will be taken away on an adventure. You will feel my characters; you will identify and root for them. I also write a killer bad guy. I think those are my best characters. I make you want to have the bad guy come out on top.

Book Blast: A Hard Act to Follow by Henry Bushkin

a_hard_act_to_follow

“A Hard Act to Follow,” is a non-fiction literary account of Henry Bushkin’s tenure as Johnny Carson’s lawyer, business partner, and friend.  The book gives genuine insight into the ‘Carson behind Johnny’ with candid personal vignettes about the two, during the rollicking years when Johnny was the undisputed king of television.  This is an engaging, eye-opening, anecdote-packed story about a young lawyer and his client, one of the biggest celebrities in the country.  This funny, unfiltered account gives readers a look at the Johnny Carson that none but a select few really knew.

“A Hard Act to Follow” by Henry Bushkin provides a stirring account into Johnny Carson’s world—as told by Carson’s closest confidant.
The New Yorker article by Kenneth Tynan from 1978, included the following question and answer:
Tynan: When you’re at home, whom do you entertain?
Carson: My lawyer, Henry Bushkin, who’s probably my best friend.

Praise for the Book

“I loved the book.” ~Wayne Newton

“Henry was Johnny’s closest friend for many years which becomes clear through many of the wonderful chapters of the book.” ~Bob Trapenberg

“The book is full of tough love, humor, cultural history, sadness, humor, love, loss, well I guess I am saying it is full of life.” ~Rupert Garcia

” Henry’s portrayal of Johnny was spot on. I highly recommend this book which is the closest the reader will ever get to know the real Carson.” ~ Ed Weinberger, former Tonight Show writer and Producer for Carson Productions

“A beautifully easy read that pulls you in to an effortless journey through Johnny Carson’s effortful life. The glamour  the fellow celebrities behind the curtain, the loyalties, and the betrayals. It certainly provides new insight on decisions and the lives that are behind the scenes.” ~Kathy Davis, Kathy Takes on Books

“”I have read this book and it is FAB! If you love reading about celebrities, this is awesome. It is also a great memoir as well. I am a huge memoir fan so this one was a real treat and one of the best I have read in this genre in a long time” ~Mary,  Bookhounds Blog

“Bushkin’s easy, unpretentious style allows the reader to be a fly on the wall as this inside story plays out in the rarified air on which Johnny thrived. “A HARD ACT TO FOLLOW” is a must read whether you grew up on Johnny or never heard of him. And then there are the supporting characters — from the Rat Pack to Johnny’s Ice Queen mother ranging around the pages disturbing the peace. I read it straight through in 90 minutes and was left wanting more.”  ~Sandy Ignon, Screenwriter (RANSOM).

“The tales are epic in nature and stretch from the first page to the last. “A Hard Act to Follow” is an honest appraisal of Carson and shows his dark side. In this, Bushkin strikes the right blend of salacious detail with an appropriate dose of discretion. Sure, you’ll learn more detail about Carson’s marriages– in a tasteful way.  Bushkin will leave you wanting more. Great books will do that.” ~Barry Mordis, Senior VP at Merryl-Lynch

“No one would describe Johnny as easy going-there was an edge to him that Bushkin always managed to soften. He continues to do that in this book. There was that challenging side of Johnny which is also captured in the book. Henry was Johnny’s closest friend for many years which becomes clear through many of the wonderful chapters of the book. All in all a great book to read.” ~Bob Trapenberg, Johnny’s former Tennis Pro.
